The Shining (1980)
CinemaXanadu has been dark for about a year but I am delighted to announce our forthcoming reopening.
The Shining is Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror film, adapted from Stephen King’s novel of the same name. The film is about madness and the energies madness sets loose in an isolated situation primed to magnify them. It is also about writer’s block and unreliable narration. Its stars are Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall.
The film has an interesting history, in that, when originally released in the US, it ran for 146 minutes. Kubrick later reduced its duration to 113 minutes and it is this version, ‘the European’ or ‘Director’s’ cut that we will be showing.
We will be projecting it in a high definition Blu-ray version, which I mention because we have a new, very high quality, Blu-ray player and because the cinema’s sound system has been recently upgraded. The Shining is one of those unusual films that have become the subject of another film, Room 237 (not yet released in the UK).
I am thrilled to announce that the our screening will be introduced by its Executive Producer, Jan Harlan, thus providing us with an opportunity to watch and discuss what has become a cult classic with one of the people directly involved in its production.
As usual, we meet for drinks at 7.30pm, screen at 8pm, followed by discussion and then by tea, coffee and desserts. Please note the screening is on a Sunday.
